Winding down this blog

Well, it’s time to officially end or transform this blog.  I would like to keep all the various links, but the job I started last July has gotten the better of my time.  So the new officers wisely decided to have communications go through RVW website.  Meantime I’ll figure out how to end this blog gracefully.  Was so much fun!  Thanks to all who read the postings and contributed!  I will update new officers and a few other things soon.  Right now grandson’s basketball game calls…

See you at Sindbad’s at 1pm Friday?

Rachel and I’ll be there. Will you?!?! Much fun. Look for coupons for Pewabic Pottery in local papers.

Tonight I am grading the very last assignment I gave my 26 students at University of Michigan-Dearborn. I’ve been teaching Concepts of Environmentalism, a course I took in 1978! And I’m teaching it for the same person I took it from who is on sabbatical this year. Full circle. I hope to turn in grades tomorrow and launch these amazing young people onto their next adventure.

For the rest of my week I’m having fun working part time doing outreach and education for the People’s Food Cooperative. This job is a keeper–great boss and meaningful work. Stress close to zero. I teach one more course for Dr. Gelderloos next semester then I’ll be down to just the one job at the Co-op. So the month of May is looking good and Rachel and I are already planning to caravan to Petoskey with Buddy and Henry Boy. Can hardly wait.

Anyway, you can see why this blog has been so sorely neglected. Can’t wait to see everyone Friday!!!

Lunch tomorrow in Belleview plus Camping World discount

Don’t forget to gather at 1 pm tomorrow–Saturday, Oct. 20–at O’Charley’s restaurant (9729 Belleville Rd., Belleville, MI., 48111).  It is located on Belleville Rd. a short ways north of I-94.   And Shirley has somehow arranged a 10 percent discount for all of us at Camping World!  So bring an appetite, shopping list, and your wallet!  See you there!

First Fall 2012 luncheon now official!

In addition to sharing good news about Helen Anderson and Nancy Wurm, Shirley emailed the invitation below to Great Lakers and friends (note I’ve added hyperlinks to a few things).  I’m pleased that I can actually make it and hope all of you can, too!

From Shirley: I’ve scheduled a luncheon date, and hope that lots of you will be able to attend.  It will be on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1:00 at O’Charley’s restaurant, located at 9729 Belleville Rd., Belleville, MI., 48111.  It is located on Belleville Rd., just a short way north off I-94.  It’s a very nice place, kind of similar to an Applebys, with lots of variety on the menuCamping World is just around the corner, in case you need to shop for anything.

I hope lots of you can attend, we need to elect our officers for 2013.  Please let me know if you plan to attend, so I can firm up the reservation.  Shirley_Denise at hotmail dot com

Our rally schedule for 2013 is nearly complete, I’d like to see one more on our schedule, for late May or late Sept. or early Oct.  If you’re interested in hosting an event, I have a few ideas for locations.  I’m certain we can rustle up some help if you’re a first time host.  Just let me know if you’d like to take a weekend.

Detroit Camper & RV Show runs from Oct 3-7

For those already pining for next year’s RV season (okay we aren’t all lucky enough to be heading south for the winter in our RVs!), you might want to check out the 23rd Annual Fall Detroit Camper & RV Show. There are supposed to be 50 brands and 500 RV units costing from $5,000 to $400,000.  Parts and accessories will also be for sale.

The show will be at that place that has had a hundred name changes: the Suburban Collection Showplace, 46100 Grand River Avenue, Novi, MI 48374 (1 mile west of Novi Road).

Hours: Weekdays: 2-9 pm; Saturday: 11 am-9 pm; Sunday: 11 am-6 pm

Adults admission is $8 and seniors $7.  But click here to download $1 off tickets or get them at Huron-Clinton Metroparks, Big Boy restaurants and in area newspapers.  You can also purchase $2-off advance tickets at select Metro-Detroit Home Depot stores (see website for list).  Parking is extra so might want to carpool with another Great Laker 🙂

Preview of 2013 Great Lakers rallies

Most of you have received updates from RVing Women announcing our Great Lakers 2013 rallies (cut and pasted in full from website below).  Hopefully we will gather for lunch soon and talk about these and other 2013 fun things!  I hope to get to a few rallies in 2013 plus doing the Canadian portion of my circle tour of Lake Superior and/or circling Lake Michigan.  My blog–like the rest of my life–needs to be updated, but you can check it out at circlingthelakes.com.  Note that I’m updating this blog before my own :).

JUNE 14-16, 2013 – Joint Great Lakers Chapter and Ohio River Valley Chapter
Niles, Michigan – Riverfront Park Campground

Join us for a camping with duck tape rally full of fun activities, some of them inspired by the annual Duck Tape Festival in Avon, Ohio. Each person will be asked to make a duck tape project and to bring it to the rally. It can be anything you might use while camping. Let your imagination go wild. For ideas and inspiration, just google “stuff to make with duck tape.”

Friday night, your hosts Shirley and Denise will greet you with finger foods and sweet treats. Saturday activities will include biking, kayaking, tubing, golf or just relaxing and hearing about everyone’s winter adventures. We will go to a local restaurant for dinner. Later in the evening, we will have judging for the duck tape projects, with very interesting prizes for the winners in several categories. We also will have materials available so projects can be made during the weekend. The judging will be followed with a campfire.

Sunday will begin with a pitch-in breakfast, more outdoor activities for those who can stay another night, and goodbyes for those who must leave.

Make your own reservations at Riverfront Park Campground by calling 269-687-9681. Be sure to mention you are with RVW to get a lakeside spot. The campground is located at 1701 Pucker Street, Niles MI 49120. Campsites will be held until May 1.

JULY 25-28, 2013 Great Lakers Chapter
Cedarville, Michigan – Loons Point RV Park and Campground

Join us at this wonderful new rally location in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This campground is located directly on Lake Huron in the Les Cheneaux Islands area. While exact rally details are currently being worked out, we know the rally will include a boat tour of the Soo Locks, referred to as one of the great wonders of the world—and it is the largest waterway traffic system on earth.

There is something for everyone to do and see in this area. Kayaking, birding and fishing can all be done from the campground. Kayak and canoe rentals are available. The campground is close to golf courses, casinos, a couple quaint museums, Drummond Island, Great Lake Boat Building School, and much more. Information about this campground is available at www.loonspoint.com.

Mark your calendars and check back for complete details. René Gray and Pat Reader are the rally hosts. For more information, email kixs42@mail.com.

AUGUST 8-11, 2013- Joint Ohio River Valley Chapter and Great Lakers Chapter
Finley, Ohio – Pleasant View Recreation

Join us for a weekend celebration of the Flag City Balloon Fest. In addition to scheduling activities in conjunction with the Balloon Fest, we will have dinner out on Friday night, a potluck breakfast Saturday morning and a Sunday hitch-up breakfast provided by our rally hosts. We will have the use of an outdoor pavilion and indoor meeting rooms for gatherings.

The Balloon Fest starts Friday at 4 p.m. There will be displays, food vendors, tethered balloon rides (just $20 in 2012), impressive hot air balloon flights leaving from the Findlay Balloon Fest Park, and evening balloon illuminations. A classic car show has also been tentatively scheduled for this event. Fireworks traditionally close the festival.

Campsites are $43/night for full hookups with 50-amp service, $40 for full hookups with 30-amp service, $29/night for water/electric. Cabins are available for $100/night for four people, $90/night for two people. Rates are subject to change. Good Sam discounts are honored. Amenities include a swimming pond with water slide and nearby walking trails, mountain bike trails, mini golf and disc golf.

Make your own campsite reservations starting as early as April 1, 2013. Call the campground at 419-299-3897, email campfire7@frontier.com or go online to www.pleasantviewcampgroundandcabins.com. At the time you make your reservations, please also go online to the RVW website to make your reservation there as well. There is a $10 rally fee for event.

Pleasant View Recreation is located at 12611 Allen Township Road 218, Van Buren, Ohio 45889, just six miles north of Findlay, Ohio. Take exit 164 off I-75, go through Van Buren (a small town with a stop sign), go over the railroad tracks and then make a quick right. Do not go to Van Buren State Park as it is more primitive; instead, follow left around the turn to Pleasant View Recreation on the right.
